Give it a try. Tell a friend you’re heading to Portugal. It’s highly likely they’ll ask, “Lisbon or Porto?”. Even though the country has many more jewels to discover (see our guides on Portim\u00e3o<\/a> <\/strong>or Tavira<\/a><\/strong>), holiday choices often boil down to these two splendid cities. Here’s a brief take on them, but bear in mind, it’s all pretty subjective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s first clarify regarding travel: both Lisbon and Porto hold their own. They’re both well-serviced by airlines, especially budget ones (like Ryanair, Transavia, EasyJet, and Vueling). So, the fares tend to be reasonably priced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83c\udf26\ufe0f Climate: rather Lisbon or Porto?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You’d think, being just 300 kilometres apart, the weather would be identical. But, not really. Porto, to the north, has a more varied climate: colder winters and more rainfall throughout the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Temperatures are, on average, 2 degrees higher in Lisbon than Porto. Both cities can experience intense heatwaves from Africa during the summer. However, they enjoy a more maritime climate compared to the more arid inland areas.<\/p>\n\n\n

\ud83d\udeb8 Family trip: Porto better than Lisbon?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

That’s what some believe. If you’re coming with a pushchair, remember both cities are built on hills, so you might break a sweat. But Porto, arguably, is calmer and better suited for strolls, especially along the Douro River (here are 5 reasons to visit<\/a><\/strong>, but in French).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cultural offerings are almost on par with Lisbon. A must-visit: the Serralves Foundation, home to the city’s contemporary art museum, which we reckon is among the best in Europe. Other relaxing activities in Porto include a fish lunch at the quaint fishing village of S\u00e3o Pedro da Afurada, on the Douro’s south bank, or a historical trip to Guimar\u00e3es, east of the city, known as the cradle of Portuguese culture.<\/p>\n\n\n

\ud83c\udf77 Trip with mates: Lisbon’s nightlife beats Porto<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While Porto is ideal for laid-back weekends with pals, if you’re looking for a proper party, head to Lisbon. With bustling bars in Bairro Alto, the eateries and clubs at Cais do Sodr\u00e9 along the Tagus River, and the Fado performances in the Alfama district, you’re spoilt for choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, the city boasts numerous rooftops. Even though we’ve got a soft spot for Porto’s aerial views, the nights in Lisbon are simply magical from the terraces of certain bars and eateries. We’re fond of the LX Factory<\/strong> cultural space, the N10 Duque de Loul\u00e9 Hotel<\/strong>, and the Torel Palace<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n
