Well, let’s just say it right away: we asked a few travelling friends around us, and few knew about this destination. And they’re wrong! Gjirokastër, with its austere spelling, is nonetheless a little Ottoman gem that’s not lacking in charm.
💡 Another unusual place in the region? We recommend Velika Planina, in Slovenia. We even wrote an article about it!
Where is Gjirokastër and how to get there?
Yes, that’s the first question to ask. Gjirokastër is located in southern Albania, 150 km south of the capital to be precise. This small town of 25,000 souls nestles on the slopes of Mali i Gjerë, literally “The Great Mountain” and on the banks of the Drino River.
Gjirokaster, is it beautiful?
Well, yes, that’s why we’re telling you about it. Gjirokastër has been a World Heritage Site since 2005, so we’re not lying to you. With its captivating houses dating back to the Ottoman era, its imposing fortress, and its old bazaar, it’s undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities in Albania. Judge for yourself!
Any must-see things?
A few yes.
- Gjirokastër Castle. Overlooking the Old Town, it’s an ideal landmark during your wanderings. Well-preserved, with its little touch of magic, the building houses a military museum and an old US army jet.
- Zekate House. A majestic three-story house with beautiful twin towers, built over two centuries ago.
- The Cold War Tunnel. A maze of underground passages in the city bunker (Albania has many of these).
- The Ethnographic Museum. Gjirokastër is the birthplace of former dictator Enver Hoxha and his childhood home now houses an interesting museum.
