This is news that will disappoint the world, but will surely satisfy the residents. The Municipality of Amsterdam has announced that from mid-May 2022, it will no longer be possible to smoke cannabis in the Red Light District. The reason? Mainly safety and security. Indeed, the inhabitants of this ultra-touristy area, where brothels and coffee shops rub shoulders, are often plagued by excesses. Screams, people in a drunken state, fights… there is a general discontent, and by this measure, the authorities think it is time to reduce the disruption a little.
Moreover, this is not the only measure, even if it is the most spectacular: the town hall of Amsterdam will also put in place a strengthening of restrictions on the sale of alcohol and an earlier closing time on weekends. This is the end of the cafes, bars, restaurants and brothels of the Red Light District, specifies the site of the BBC.
Here is a brief summary of the changes planned in the Red Light District :
- Ban on street cannabis use.
- Brothels to close at 3 a.m.
- Restaurants and bars to close at 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
- No new visitors allowed in the Old Town area after 1 a.m.
- Sellers will no longer be allowed to put alcohol in the window.
Amsterdam’s Red Light District attracts millions of tourists from all over the world every year. This news is thus a small revolution, in a country reputed to be tolerant to herb consumers, and a capital renowned throughout Europe for its nightlife.
