What licence do I need to drive in Europe? It’s a question we’re often asked. And if you’re reading this, you’re probably wondering the same thing. Tired of trains and buses? For your next European getaway, you want to opt for a car and the freedom of travel it offers. We understand. On the roads of Crete, or in the suburbs of Naples, when the public transport network isn’t ideal, at Destination(s) Europe, we also prefer to get behind the wheel. But you’re probably wondering if your national licence will suffice. Actually, it’s quite simple, so let’s quickly see which licence you’ll need to drive in Europe.

Is my national driving licence valid for driving in Europe?

Was your visa issued in a European Union country? Then it’s valid in all other countries. Of course, be sure to check its validity dates before travelling.

EU: what is the standardised driving licence?

Since January 2013, all driving licences issued within the European Union have a standard format. Their validity periods have also been harmonised, with each document being valid for between 10 and 15 years. These new licences, which are the size of a credit card, are also difficult to forge.

Be aware, however, that the minimum age for obtaining a driving licence can vary from country to country. If you are young, check the requirements before you travel.

Driving in Europe: Are non-EU driving licences valid?

If you hold a driving licence issued outside the European Union, you will need to check with the authorities of the country you are travelling to find out if your licence alone is valid. Otherwise, you will need to obtain an international driving permit, which allows you to drive abroad.

To drive in Italy, for example, an Australian or Moroccan driver will have to have their national licence and an international driving permit.

Brexit: Can I drive in the UK with my European driving licence?

With the UK‘s departure from the EU, several internet users have asked us if it will still be possible to drive in the UK with a French, or more broadly, a European driving licence. Rest assured: yes, it will still be possible. And this will be the case for twelve consecutive months. After this period, you will need to exchange your documents for a British driving licence or take the DVSA driving test in the UK.

🧳 So British. Everything you need to know to travel to the UK after Brexit is in this article.
