When is the best time to visit Empuriabrava?
Empuriabrava is an attractive destination all year round, but the summer months (from June to September) are generally considered the best to visit if you want to enjoy the sun and warm temperatures. However, these months are also the busiest, and with global warming, Catalonia often suffers from heatwaves. The spring months (April and May) and autumn (October and November) are quieter and still offer a pleasant climate, although the water may be a bit cooler for swimming – if you want warm water in October, this way please.
How to get to Empuriabrava from Barcelona or Girona?
Empuriabrava is easily accessible by car or bus from Barcelona (here’s our guide) or Girona. By car, the journey from the Catalan capital takes about 2 hours and from Girona about 45 minutes. Buses from Barcelona to Empuriabrava are operated by the Sarfa transport company and the journey takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours.
From Girona, you can take a bus to Figueres, and then another bus to Empuriabrava. This takes about an hour and a half in total. Another option is the train from Barcelona or Girona to Figueres, then the bus to Empuriabrava.

Yes, boat rentals are actually one of the most popular activities in Empuriabrava and a great way to explore the city’s vast canals! There are several rental companies offering a variety of options, from small motorboats to luxury yachts, like Thalassa Boat. Many of them don’t require a boating licence – not for the yachts, mind. Visit Empuriabrava Marina
Empuriabrava is dubbed “the Venice of Spain”, and for good reason. With over 30 kilometres of navigable canals, the town offers an exceptional boating experience. As mentioned earlier, you can rent a boat and sail at your own pace, admiring the picturesque houses, lush gardens and palm trees lining the canals. The reflection of the white architecture on the turquoise water, combined with the often brilliant blue sky, is truly a sight not to be missed.
📚 History highlight: Empuriabrava was built in the 1960s and 1970s by a group of architects and urban planners who wanted to create a residential marina inspired by similar places in Florida. The project was carried out on a marsh next to the town of Castelló d’Empúries, which had been an important port during the Middle Ages. Empuriabrava was planned with the vision of a city entirely geared towards water leisure, with houses built directly on the canals, allowing residents to navigate from their properties.
