Come on, today we’re taking you to visit Slovenia. And we’re going to climb a little, to get to Velika Planina. Little known to travellers, this plateau in northern Slovenia nevertheless offers a real alpine life enhanced by a breathtaking view.
💡 Another unusual place in the Balkans? Try Gjirokastër, in Albania.
Velika Planina, where is it and how to get there?
The village is located near Kamniška Bistrica in the Upper Carniola region. We’re in the north of the country, where the Alpine massif ends. To get there easily, take a flight to the capital, Ljubljana, and then take a car. You’ll be there in 45 minutes. Finally, you’ll be at the beginning of the mountain pasture. From Kamniška Bistrica, take a cable car to the village of Velika Planina.
Velika Planina, is it beautiful?
If you like landscapes that encourage contemplation (or even meditation), nature as far as the eye can see, peaks that reach the heavens, Velika Planina is very beautiful. And very picturesque.
The ideal time to visit is in spring or early summer, when the ringing of cowbells signals the arrival of the shepherds.

Velika Planina, what do we do there?
- Hiking already. It’s a bit of a must-do activity here. To help you plan yours, we found this page on the Altituderando website.
- The village of Velika Planina itself really comes alive from June onwards, when the shepherds begin their summer pastures. In total, there are 140 chalets with unique architecture scattered across the plateau.
