You’re probably asking yourself when to visit Helsinki. Frozen tundra, icy lakes… that’s the image that comes to mind when we think of Scandinavia. However, Finland boasts with a relatively mild climate thanks to its many lakes and the Gulf Stream which warms up off the Norwegian coast. Still, some periods are better than others if you want to visit Helsinki, although much depends on what is it you want to see.

In Helsinki, it can get very cold. If you want to avoid negative temperatures, you will have to wait until April. The best time to visit Helsinki is certainly during the summer months, when the climate is warmest and the days are longest. This is also the time of year when tourist attractions are most likely to be open. And in summer, you can expect temperatures averaging between 10 and 23 degrees.

Precipitation is not extraordinary but it is more or less constant throughout the year. The average annual rainfall is 65 cm, and the south is less privileged than the north in this respect.

May, June and September!

However, note that in August, Finns are on vacation and often leave the big cities. And in parallel, it is also the month when Helsinki can get crowded with international tourists. Therefore, we would recommend giving preference to the months of May, June and September.

If you want to go to Helsinki during the end of the year celebrations, and enjoy a magical moment that only Scandinavia can offer at this time of the year, make sure you are well-equipped with winter clothes: temperatures are often around -10 degrees and the wind is cold and can freeze you to your bones!
