Greece has always been a magnet for travellers, drawing them in with its picturesque landscapes and its laid-back lifestyle. Among the places that the locals are proud of is the island of Rhodes. Rhodes is bordered to the northwest by the Aegean Sea and to the southeast by the Mediterranean Sea. It is the largest island in the Dodecanese, an archipelago of twelve Greek islands close to Turkey. This Paradise Island has a lot to offer in terms of places to visit and things to do. You’ll certainly never be bored. Let’s explore the top 10 things you must do in Rhodes.

🗺️ Everything about the gem of the Cyclades. If you’re considering a getaway to Santorini, here are our top recommendations, along with a selection of hotels with private pool for a truly magical experience.

Before we start our list of essential things to do in Rhodes, here are a few tips for your upcoming journey.

How to get around the island of Rhodes?

Compared to other Greek islands, except for Crete, Rhodes is large. However, getting around is fairly easy. There are numerous means of transport available. From the capital, Rhodes Town in the north, two bus companies serve the east and west of the island. Buses can be caught near the new market (Agora Nea). The most convenient option is to rent a car, or even better, a scooter (usually for less than 20 euros a day). This will especially help you explore the secluded villages in the south.

Which islands to visit from Rhodes?

Many of the Dodecanese islands, including Rhodes, can be reached from the island itself. If you’re planning a day trip, your options will be limited. Two ideal choices are Symi and Halki. Two others that require more travel time are Kos and Leros (at least 4 hours for the latter, making your visit brief). Symi Island is probably the most accessible. It’s opposite the Turkish coast and looks like a little slice of heaven, especially when the setting sun illuminates the port of Gialos…

What is the most beautiful city in Rhodes?

In our opinion, it has to be the town of Lindos, located about fifty kilometres south of the island’s capital. With its white houses and ancient history, it embodies the beauty and tranquillity of Greece.

Which hotel to choose on the island of Rhodes?

In Rhodes, you’ll mainly find large resort hotels offering high-quality services. Among the most renowned establishments, there’s the Atrium Palace Thalasso Spa Resort & Villas. Located in Kalathos, on the island’s east coast, it boasts spacious rooms and a variety of pools to cool off in. The food there is plentiful, fresh, and local. A similar hotel near Rhodes Town is the Atrium Platinum Luxury Resort Hotel & Spa.

If you’re looking for something more intimate with sleek and refined decor (but still boasting a lovely pool), then you’ll probably love Casa Cook Rhodes. This hotel, located in Kolimbia (northeast), epitomises Greek luxury.

Now that the practicalities are out of the way, let’s dive into our guide. Here are, in our opinion, the top 10 must-do activities in Rhodes.

Explore the medieval old town

If you want to fully appreciate Rhodes’ architectural heritage and medieval history, strolling through the medieval old town is a must. Its thick walls and Middle Ages alleyways are still marked by Ottoman and Jewish influences. The old town of Rhodes has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. You’ll find numerous shops, especially around Hippokratous Square.

As you wander through the medieval old town, don’t forget to visit the Knights’ quarter and the Grand Master’s Palace.

Visit the ancient site of Kamiros

Located on the northwest coast of Rhodes, the ancient city of Kamiros is a characteristic example of Hellenistic urbanism, with its division between public and private buildings. This stunning city was built on three distinct sectors. The highest being the Acropolis and the Stoa, constructed atop a hill. The temple was in the same sector. It’s an essential stop in Rhodes, both for its uniqueness and historical significance.

Sunbathe on Pefkos Beach

Set in a small bay surrounded by hills and pine trees, Pefkos beach is a quiet spot favoured by families, couples, and locals. It’s the perfect place to relax, away from the hustle of cities and livelier resorts. Its shallow waters are great for swimming and water sports. You can also grab a drink or a bite to eat at one of the beachside bars and restaurants.

Climb the Acropolis of Lindos

Another Rhodes must-see and historic monument, the Lindos Acropolis is an essential archaeological site in this part of Greece. Standing on a 125-meter rock, it overlooks the city and offers a breathtaking view of the Aegean Sea.

Once the main city before the founding of Rhodes, Lindos is home to countless ancient structures to explore. Among them is the theatre, which once held nearly 1800 spectators and is carved into the hillside. Though today only ruins remain, Lindos’ acropolis stands as one of the most important in Greece after Athens’.

Admire St. Paul’s Bay

A trip to Rhodes is incomplete without visiting St. Paul’s Bay. Located at the foot of the acropolis, the bay is named after Saint Paul, who arrived at the island in 43 AD to preach Christianity. One of the bay’s highlights is the beautiful white chapel, which hosts several weddings each year. It’s worth a visit, and perhaps even considering it for your own wedding. The bay also boasts stunning beaches for much-needed relaxation.

Have fun at the Water Park

Around 12 km from Rhodes city centre, the Water Park is the perfect place to have fun and cool down. The park has a range of attractions for everyone, including open and enclosed water slides, express slides, and free-fall water attractions. The park is open from May to October, with extended hours during the summer holidays in June, July, and August.

Visit the Kahal Kadosh Shalom synagogue

As mentioned earlier, Rhodes had a well-established Jewish community by the 14th century. One of the island’s capital’s marks from this period is the Kahal Kadosh Shalom synagogue, meaning “Synagogue of the Holy Congregation of Peace”. Built in 1577, it remains active today. It’s a must-visit for anyone interested in Rhodes’ Jewish history.

Gather at the Tsambika Monastery

If you’re up for a bit of a climb, head to the Tsambika Monastery. This religious building, perched on a small rocky peak, is only accessible after climbing 300 steps. Yet, many believe in its miraculous powers. It has become a pilgrimage site for childless or infertile women. These women often visit barefoot, praying to the Virgin and vowing to name their child Tsambíkas or Tsambikos.

Visit the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes

This vast building houses artefacts found during various excavations on the island and many of the most significant archaeological discoveries from the Dodecanese islands. Construction began in 1489 under the Grand Master de Lastic, using funds bequeathed by his predecessor, Flouvianos. If you’re keen on sculptures and ancient artefacts, this museum is a must-visit.

Take care of yourself at the thermal baths of Kallithea

This impressive spa facility, located about ten kilometres south of Rhodes, is worth a detour. Known since antiquity for its water’s healing properties, the current spa was developed in 1929 by the Italians. It’s the perfect place for some self-care and a great photo opportunity for your Instagram feed.

We hope our selection of top things to do in Rhodes helps you plan your trip. If you have other activity suggestions, feel free to share them in the comments.
