Travelling to Europe in autumn often means benefiting from more favourable rates than during the peak season. Who hasn’t shifted their holiday to late September to escape both the crowds and exorbitant prices? But travelling during this period is primarily an opportunity to discover or revisit places enhanced by the autumnal hues and twilight lighting throughout the day. With photographic evidence, we’ve selected some of the most picturesque autumn landscapes to admire across Europe.

☃️ When the snow falls. If you love travelling at the end of the year, when the magic happens, here are the most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe and in France.

Neuschwanstein Castle | Germany

It’s hard to find a more enchanting atmosphere than the one around Neuschwanstein Castle when the first leaves begin to fall. Built in the 19th century and located near Füssen, it attracts almost a million visitors annually. It’s a must-visit if you’re touring southern Germany.

Plitvice Lakes | Croatia

Located 140 km from the Croatian capital, Zagreb, these lakes and waterfalls are as majestic in spring as in autumn. But in the latter season, their waters take on a rusty hue, reflecting the fall foliage. If you can’t make it to Canada, this is a worthy alternative. However, note that while prices might be lower than in the summer, boats and buses operating within this national park only run until the end of October.

Transylvania | Romania

Put aside the vampire tales and head to Transylvania in northwest Romania. In the autumn, its forests adopt a more charming than chilling shade of red. The Transfăgărășan highway, stretching 100 km, offers a glimpse of the area’s magic. But be cautious: before the first snowfalls, it’s best visited early in the season.

The Douro Valley | Portugal

Portugal is a favourite among international tourists in spring and especially summer. However, autumn in the Douro Valley, renowned for its vineyards, is also captivating. The off-peak season presents striking ochre hues surrounding the river, showcasing some of Europe’s most breathtaking autumnal views. Best paired with a fine Port wine.

Hallstatt | Austria

Located in the Salzkammergut mountain region by the Hallstättersee lake, Hallstatt is famed for its picturesque architecture and the world’s oldest salt mine (open for visits until mid-October). Besides the russet foliage reflecting on the lake, autumn is perfect for exploring the Dachstein ice caves, accessible by an old cable car.

Perthshire | Scotland

The Perth region, in the heart of Scotland, is even more beautiful as summer ends. Its nickname “Big Tree Country” gives a hint why. There are numerous trails, and spots like The Hermitage – a site protected by the National Trust for Scotland in Dunkeld – are definitely worth the detour. From Edinburgh or Glasgow, it’s easily reachable by car or train.

🛤️ By Train: If you’re travelling around Scotland without a car, here are some places to visit from Edinburgh.

Lapland | Finland

Lapland isn’t just for winter sled rides and Santa searches. Between the endless summer sun and near-absent winter sun, autumn strikes a balance. Especially when the lake shores turn red, with many hotels positioned for the best views.

Lake Bled | Slovenia

Located in the Upper Carniola region about 50 km from the capital, Ljubljana, this lake is a gem. The diverse palette of surrounding nature is stunning, and the climate still permits a bike ride. Also, don’t miss the Vintgar Gorge, just 4 km away.

Lublin and its region | Poland

Located in eastern Poland, near the Belarus border, the heavily forested Lublin region boasts some of Europe’s most splendid autumn vistas. A trip to the Polesia National Park, northeast of the city, will convince you. In the city centre, the new leaf colours wonderfully complement the building facades. It’s gorgeous wherever you go.

London | United Kingdom

Visiting London in autumn might mean finding some great deals. More importantly, it ensures witnessing the city’s many parks adorned in warm red hues. The British capital boasts no less than eight royal parks, as well as nature reserves and botanical gardens.

🤩 Extend the magic into the night. For a truly unforgettable stay in the British capital, here is a selection of hotels with views over the whole of London.
